Care for girls and women living with female genital mutilation: a clinical handbook

2018

Detailed description

FGM can lead to a range of health risks that can impact many dimensions of a girl’s or woman’s health and well-being throughout her life course, including her physical, mental and sexual health. Health-care providers need information and skills to be able to provide the highest level of care when managing the health risks linked with FGM.

As well as providing evidence-based information for health-care providers, this handbook can also be applied by developers of curricula and clinical care protocols. It covers multiple health topics in nine chapters, ranging from communication skills and basic information about FGM, to the management of gynaecological, urological and obstetric complications. Chapters on first-line mental and sexual health support add to this comprehensive package to address multiple aspects of women’s health and well-being.

Detailed description

Teacher’s guide:

FGM and the management of its health complications are rarely covered in detail in the training curricula of nurses, midwives and other health-care providers.

The topics covered by this guide will help with training for current or prospective nurses and midwives. Its four modules could also be of use to people responsible for educating and training medical students, clinical officers, public health officers and other health-care providers.

These materials can be used alongside the facilitator’s guide on person-centred communication for FGM prevention.

Integrating female genital mutilation (FGM) content into nursing and midwifery curricula: a practical guide

2022

Detailed description

Despite the numerous and often severe physical and psychosocial health consequences of FGM, nurses and midwives do not receive adequate training
on the subject.

This practical guide helps curriculum planners and educators in midwifery and nursing to develop pre-service and in-service education programmes on FGM that are relevant to the national context and need, or to build on existing FGM content in such programmes.

Person-centred communication for FGM prevention: Training package

2022

Detailed description

The overall aim of this training is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of health-care providers to be active agents of change for the prevention of FGM, including to challenge their own values towards the practice. Participants will also learn how to apply a person-centred communication approach in FGM prevention counselling, using a four-step process that encourages women to rethink their beliefs about FGM and to empower them to abandon the practice. This training guide also addresses the ethical implications of medicalized FGM and teaches ways for health-care providers to resist requests to do FGM.

These materials can be used alongside the above publication, Female genital mutilation: integrating the prevention and the management of the health complications into the curricula of nursing and midwifery.
